Update Standalone ESXi Host via Online Bundle

Here is one of a few ways to update ESXi to the latest build. As a note, patches are cumulative, the latest build will include all of the patches up to that point. This method is mainly for folks who are using the free licenses of ESXi and don't have access to the offline bundles. Keep in mind that with any update, you are responsible for the backup and recovery of any virtual machines. This is not to say you will run into trouble, but bugs and issues can happen.

I will be using the host web-client for the examples. Commands will be displayed in italics.

1. Place the host in maintenance mode and then enable SSH to your host and then log in.

Right click host > Enter Maintenance Mode
Manage > services > select TSM-SSH > START

Enter maintenance mode

2. Log into the host via SSH (you can use putty or terminal or your favorite flavor of client)

3. Check the profile version you are running
esxcli software profile get

For this test case I have the repsone of “Name: ESXi-6.0.0-20170202001-standard”

esxcli software profile get

4. Enable the host firewall rule to allow web traffic

esxcli network firewall ruleset set -e true -r httpClient

5. Run the following command to list the online depot profiles available to you (note it may take a minute).
You can append the “ESXi-6” with more information to narrow down the search.

esxcli software sources profile list -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml  | grep -i ESXi-6

esxcli software sources profile list

6. Select the package you want to install and insert it into the command. Below my version is “ESXi-6.0.0-20170601001s-standard” to take me from the Feb Build to the July Build package.

(The command below should include the URL)
esxcli software profile update -p ESXi-6.0.0-20170601001s-standard -d

https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml

After some time the following will appear: “The update completed successfully.”

Update completed successfully

7. Restart the host
reboot

When the host comes back online, check the image build now running
esxcli software profile get
